Setup Your Wireless Router

Technology is increasing day by day. Many houses and offices have wireless network which are unsecured, which can be leads to hackers as they can leak the information. However, you can protect your information by making changes in your wireless router setup.

Following six steps will definitely help you how to protect your wireless router setup from being hacked or used by unauthorized person.

STEP 1:

If you know your network I.P (skip this step). Otherwise go to “Start” menu and select “Run”. In the “Run” dialogue box type “cmd” (without quotes) and click “OK”. It will open command prompt and let you to type there too. Here type  “ipconfig/all” (without quotes) and press ENTER. Now command prompt will display you a list of your network data including your network I.P.

STEP 2:

Now launch any web browser (you use) and put your disclosed I.P in the address box and press ENTER. Now the control page of your router will be displayed. Refer to the manual/guide book type user name and password. This will allow you to work and make changes as an administrator.

STEP 3:

Within the administrative, now go to the security settings, you can change the username and password to log in to the router settings.

STEP 4 :

Disable the routers remote administrative functions. Remote administrative functions allow anyone using the Internet to access to your router.

STEP 5:

Now change the name of your network connection, means you're making changes in your wireless network setup making it more secure. Your network connection usually comes with the name like WLAN or Linksys. These name are referred to SSID. (SSID stands for Service Set Identifier, which is a 32-character sequence that uniquely identifies a wireless LAN (WLAN). In other words, the SSID is the name of the wireless network.)
 
STEP 6:

Enable encryption and enter a password in the appropriate field. Wireless routers setup use several types of encryption as default, including WPA2, WPA and WEP.

At the time of publication, WPA2 (Wi-Fi Protect Access 2) is the most secure encryption format available on some routers. But you can't use this encryption type if your router doesn't support it.

WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) is recommended if WPA2 isn't available on your specific model.

WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy is the least secure of all the encryption formats and is relatively easy to hack. If you have no other choice, use at least WEP encryption. Some protection is better than no protection.

STEP 7:

Save your password and settings that you have made some where for future use

STEP 8 :

If you lose your password, simply press Reset button usually at the back of router device. And repeat the above steps to stay safe and make your data protected.
